Additional Course Info
Addictive behaviors such as internet pornography, marijuana, cutting, smoking, alcohol, sexual immorality, and others are examined by telling the stories of six women and men. With each story a part of the spiritual solution to temptation, compulsion and addiction is presented. In addition, a dramatic or comedic vignette forcefully drives home a truth. Addictions follow a pattern known as the addictive cycle. In this course students will discover keys to dismantling this cycle through developing elements of a vibrant spiritual life.
In this course you will meet Sasha (addicted to pornography), Scott (addicted to cutting), Kimberly (bulimic), Nathan (addicted to drugs and pornography), Heidi (sexual addiction), and Camille (family dysfunction and addiction). Each story is powerfully told and teaches the addiction cycle and addiction equation, and explains how the truth of God as a sympathetic and understanding Father breaks through our dysfunction and brings healing and hope.
The first goal of the Sex, Food & God course is to learn how the addictive cycle works. This is the pattern that drive the two dozen or more addictive activities that people struggle with. As we learn this we can also see how the addictive cycle can be taken apart piece by piece. To drive this truth home, these eight different people will tell their stories. These individuals will be interviewed singly and as a group. We will particularly address pornography, food, and alcohol addiction.
The interviews and group interviews are an integral part of the course because what those individuals have gone through will strike a common chord in all of us. Their stories will help us stand outside of our struggles and understand ourselves and our weaknesses better. Further, the stories will encourage us with the positive results that are now in their lives.
If you choose to work with a mentor, which is recommended, the truths that you are learning can become personalized for your life. In working with a mentor and following the strategies described, a person struggling with an addictive behavior will be given the tools for success.
With a mentor, the participant will interact with the mentor two times within the course for an hour apiece. Interaction via messaging will also occur at the end of each session with regards to the quizzes, journaling or question answering.
