General Session  Christians live by faith and that faith gives us a conviction of unseen realities March 9, 9:30 AM

1. The Belief Cycle: A Tool for Pastors & Counselors March 8, 2019 - 10:30 AM Room: Heritage Room

We at Becoming What God Intended Ministries have created a tool that has been found very effective in discipling Christians and helping believers to address emotional issues in their lives. Showing the relationship between how we see things spiritually, our perspective, our emotions, desires, and actions, it creates insight and action for change.

As a result of disciplining thousands of believers the conclusion we have come to is that often Christians are confused about how their inner life works, and how the Spirit of God influences and changes that inner life. One of our team members created a tool that addresses such confusion, and allows the Spirit of God to work. We will share that tool and give examples of how it may be used.

2. How We See, Is How We Live! March 8, 2019 - 1:30 PM Room: Heritage Room

Spiritual insight and “eyesight” is critical to spiritual growth. We must recognize that we have inherited “Adam’s Eyes” so that we often see God as untrustworthy, ourselves and others with hate, and this world as dangerous and we are unprotected from its dangers. How do we change this?

Our false views of nearly everything resist establishing a healthy relationship with God the Father, a vital experience of our Union with Christ, and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Not only have we inherited their physical DNA; we also inherited so to speak their spiritually fallen DNA. Their DNA has completely altered our spiritual eyesight. We will see that the New Testament shows us how to establish healthy spiritual insight. This workshop is a must for pastors and counselors who want to have an effective approach to spiritual transformation.

3. Participating in the Life of God
March 8, 2019 - 4:30 PM Room: Heritage Room

We must recognize the Father’s unique role within the Trinity and his unique love for us. With our new way of seeing God and ourselves comes a new way of seeing the Trinity. This workshop will present a clear picture of the interrelationships of the Trinity, and how we participate with them.

We need to recognize that the Son and the Holy Spirit are fully cooperating with God in his love for us. The Father is the focus Person of the Trinity and the other two members cooperate in the Father’s desire to share his love for his Son with us. So we can experience that love he has placed us in Christ. Such a joy demands a radical experience of living within the Trinity.

4. Head to Heart, How to Have Biblical Truth Become Emotionally Powerful & Instinctual
March 9, 2019 - 8:00 AM Room: Heritage Room

Christians need a discipleship program that takes the truths of the Bible and makes them a vibrant aspect of their emotional life, instincts, and relationships. We will present such a process and introduce the resources to carry out this new approach to Christian instruction.

Sad but true most discipleship programs teach the mind what to think and what the person ought to do but often the true transformation of the heart is left unaddressed. The Bible has a distinct approach to the changing of the emotions, the instincts, and the perspective. We will present that approach and the resources to make true transformation a part of your preaching and discipleship approach. At the same time a rich relationship to each Member of the Trinity will be presented and integrated into this discipleship process.

5. Why People Argue

March 9, 2019 - 12:45 PM Room: Heritage Room

Most family arguments follow a predictable pattern. This presentation shows how tension leads to one of four predictable patterns. We will share those patterns in an exercise of self-discovery, and give an alternative biblical pattern.

Virginia Satir has isolated four miscommunication patterns that couples fall into. Understanding those patterns and knowing how to positively change them will solve many marital difficulties. We will see these patterns are described in the Bible and the solution to them the Bible also presents. Once these patterns are understood and the couple has the alternative approach, they will have a better relationship and a deeper friendship.

6. Discipling the Chinese Christian

March 9, 2019 - 3:45 PM Room: N11

Every culture carries its baggage into Christianity. Like with everything else we must keep the best and throw out the rest. What are the particular challenges that Chinese individuals face as they enter the church? We will examine those, and share strategies.

With 2500 years of Confucian influence on their culture, and the tremendous upheaval of the cultural revolution, the Chinese Christian in China, Hong Kong, and the United States have utterly unique challenges to their Christian walk. We will examine six different areas to see how to meet those challenges, and share handouts containing effective spiritual exercises.

STEVE FEDEN, SR. PASTOR CALVARY CHAPEL FLUVANNA, VA

Head to Heart is having a great impact on our church leadership and even on my preaching.  Almost daily we are using the truths we are learning in counseling and even casual conversation with others.  It has become so clear that there can be such difference between what people say they believe and what they really believe in their heart.  I have a better understanding of what questions to ask and how to help people uncover deeper issues that are keeping them from being fruitful in their walk with Christ.

I don’t know how many times our staff has said, “That person needs Head to Heart!”  What I love most about the material is that there is no mixing with worldly psychology methods.  Dr. Eckman has highlighted and greatly emphasized the eternal truths about the love of God the Father, the sufficiency of the Son’s sacrifice, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit.  Helping people replace lies with these truths is both powerful and life changing.  I have to admit that this is the first discipleship material I have found that has clearly emphasized the connection between truth and emotion.  In an emotionally driven culture, I am now much more able to minister to people in a way that fosters both spiritual and emotional healing.

Experiencing the Father's Affection.

A SMALL GROUP DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM

A small group discipleship program

Key Elements of Head-to-Heart...

Surely you heard of [Christ] and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:21-24, NIV)

Head-to-Heart helps you take off your old self and put on your new self by a process that helps to get God’s truth from your head to where it needs to go, to the inner parts of your heart. Rather than focus solely on “learning,” this class provides a discipleship process that helps to put truth in your heart. The process has three key elements: 1) focused biblical teaching, 2) identifying our “false instinctive beliefs,” and 3) a design of teaching and small groups that help us to integrate God’s truth.

Focused Biblical Teaching

A problem for many Christians is that they are so inundated with information that it is overwhelming, and God’s truths are not organized in their minds in a way that focuses the heart on what is truly important. In this class we address this problem through the “hierarchy of the heart” that explores the biblical pattern for integrating the truth so that it grows within. The truths that need to be carefully practiced are placed front and center in a prioritized order. The goal is to have the most important information truly absorbed at an instinctual level. The hierarchy begins by focusing on God the Father, his nature and character, and then proceeds to what he has done for us. (For a thorough discussion of the Hierarchy of the Heart, see Knowing the Heart of the Father, p. 145-233.)

Identifying Our False Instinctive Beliefs

One of the fundamental obstacles to integrating God’s truth at a heart level is that we still have, even as believers, false instinctive beliefs operating in our lives. We acquired these false instinctive beliefs from our fallen world, our culture, and our families. Most of them were already well-entrenched by the time we became adults, and we likely are unaware of some of these false beliefs because they are so “normal” to us. These beliefs operate at a deep and powerful level, because strong emotions are attached to them. Under stress we are especially likely to act according to these instinctive beliefs.

These false instinctive beliefs wage a powerful underground guerilla war against successfully integrating God’s truth. Therefore, a key part of the Head-to-Heart process is to help each individual uncover the false instinctive beliefs that are still operating in their lives. Here are some of the common false beliefs that affect us at the deep level of our identity:

• I must meet certain standards to feel good about myself

• I must be accepted (approved) by others to accept myself

• Those who fail are unworthy of love and acceptance

• I am what I am, so I cannot change

• I am my physical appearance

• Who I am is a result of choices by others

• I am what I have done, or my performance defines me

A powerful approach for identifying our false beliefs is to understand that our emotions and behavior can be traced back to our actual beliefs (these are usually, for believers, a mixture of God’s truth and false instinctive beliefs).

In order for God’s truths to become our own instinctive beliefs, we need to feel and experience these truths at a heart level. Although we are not usually taught the importance of our imagination for spiritual growth, it is God’s intent that we use our imagination to help us see the world the way he does. Integrating God’s truth into our hearts requires that we use our imagination to picture ourselves in the truths of the Bible. Accordingly the teaching in Head-to-Heart includes a variety of illustrations and exercises to help us picture God’s truth.

In addition, God has designed us so that we need healthy connection with other people to grow spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. When we process deeply with others in a safe environment, we discover more about ourselves, God, and our relationships. The very act of speaking out loud the truth we are discovering helps us to plant it more deeply within. Thus Head-to-Heart seeks to create a safe small group environment where we help each other explore how the teaching applies to our lives. We ask each participant to commit to a set of Group Expectations that are designed to create a safe environment where we can be honest and open about what we really think, feel, and experience in our lives. Each gender-specific small group has two co-facilitators, and the facilitators’ main role is to model and help the group practice these Expectations.
